Workshop Description

Who should attend: Faculty members participating in the development of processes to assess program outcomes of student learning in any academic discipline

Develop your assessment skills with this one-day workshop: Participants will sharpen their assessment knowledge, broaden their understanding of continuous improvement processes, and learn new assessment methods they can implement when they return to campus. This workshop is interactive and faculty will work in small groups applying the concepts learned throughout the day. Participants will receive a workshop booklet containing all slides and reference materials.

Faculty will leave the workshop able to . . .

  • Identify key elements of a functional assessment plan.

  • Clarify the similarities and differences between course and program assessment.

  • Put objectives and outcomes to work by developing measurable performance criteria.

  • Develop scoring rubrics to assess student learning.

  • Understand the pros and cons of various assessment methods.

  • Utilize an assessment-planning matrix.

  • Create clear and concise reports on assessment and continuous improvement.

Here is a brief outline of the day:

  • Introduction and review of key terminology

  • Introduction to assessment plan cycle

  • Developing measurable performance criteria

  • Writing scoring rubrics

  • Simplifying curriculum mapping

  • Reviewing and selecting assessment tools

  • Developing efficient processes

  • Reviewing an assessment-planning matrix

  • Reporting results

If you’ve already developed your program’s objectives and outcomes, and you’re looking to take the next steps in your continuous improvement plan, this workshop is for you.

About the Workshop Leader

The leader of this workshop is Gloria Rogers, Ph.D., who has been active in disseminating information on program assessment and institutional effectiveness for 20 years. She has authored or co-authored over 30 publications, made over 50 invited presentations and seminars at national and regional conferences, and given presentations or workshops on over 80 college campuses, 18 of which were outside U.S. borders. She has also served as an external evaluator on 17 NSF-funded projects and currently serves on advisory committees for the National Science Foundation, American Association of Colleges & Universities, and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.  Rogers is currently the Associate Executive Director, Professional Services, at ABET.
